van Hoven discussed the explosion of pharmacologic agents over the past two decades and the multidisciplinary field in which these drugs are becoming vital for this patient population. He further highlighted new technologies that have reshaped diabetes patient care, including continuous glucose monitoring and how this instantaneous data allows doctors to analyze findings in real time. In addition, van Hoven touched on the rising cost of insulin and access issues and how they are proving to be barriers to care. “Certainly there has to be some change,” he said. “And I don’t know, it doesn’t look good right now, but there definitely has to be some change for a cap on insulin prices.” Finally, van Hoven provided insights for patients who may have problems managing the disease and advice for clinicians treating this population. “The key to managing diabetes is exercise and weight loss and really, you know, committing to a healthier lifestyle,” she added.
