PA Local Ronaldo Boutros said he believed he was driving past the scene of the crash on the A40 as police cordoned off the area. He told the Standard: “I thought it was the result of an accident. I really believed that the blankets were used to keep the wounded comfortable after a collision. “Then I found out it was actually a knife. Only then did I think there was a body under those blankets.” Parish Advani whose home is near the crime scene told the Standard he was “deeply shocked” by the incident. He said: “I’m on holiday but my sister contacted me about this. Police have asked if anyone has CCTV and has gone door to door. It’s terrifying, deeply shocking to have something like this happen so close to your home.” Simran Advani, 25, a senior property manager said she often saw an old man on his scooter passing the family home. She said: “We always saw him on his mobility scooter – he was always smiling, he was a nice old man. “He often runs around the block, always take the street not the sidewalk. It was dark red. “We saw him every two days. “This is a very quiet area, you never hear noise on this road. It’s scary for a man in his 80s to be killed here. “Most of the people on this street are old people, you never hear any noise or see young people. “It was like a normal day today. There is a parade of shops just around the corner under the train tracks and through a route that it may have been heading to or from.’ PA Forensic teams are at the scene looking for evidence and a police cordon has been set up around the area near the junction of Cayton Road and Runnymede Gardens. Detective Chief Inspector Jim Eastwood from the Met’s Special Crime Squad said: “My officers are working to understand what has happened to this man and we need the public’s help. “I am appealing to anyone with dashcam or cycle helmet footage to contact us if they were using Western Avenue A40 Eastbound in the vicinity of Cayton Road and Welland Gardens between 3.15pm and 4.15pm. “The elderly victim, who was riding a mobility scooter, was in the area at the time. If you saw the victim or caught someone acting suspiciously in the area, it is imperative that you get in touch.” Chief Inspector Sean Wilson, in charge of Ealing Police, said: “This is a horrific incident which will understandably cause great alarm to people locally and across London. Our thoughts are with the elderly victim. “We are supporting our Specialist Crime colleagues as they work to understand what happened and identify who is responsible for this horrific crime. “Public support is vital. The police and the community must work together to identify violent offenders and get them off our streets.” Anyone with information that could help police should call 101 ref CAD 4691/16 Aug.
