Harris County Magistrate Lina Hidalgo said officials have not yet determined how the baby contracted the disease, noting that the child has not attended daycare or school. The suspected case will not be confirmed until it is tested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “The child is currently expected to make a full recovery, he is very, very well,” Hidalgo said during a news conference broadcast by KHOU 11. He said the only symptom the child is showing is a rash. Contact tracing is ongoing, but no one has contracted the virus from the child yet, Hidalgo said. The child’s parents are also cooperating with officials. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo speaks during a news conference Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022. KHOU “This case in Harris County is one of the few cases in young children nationwide,” he said. “I understand it’s a very scary thing and parents are worried.” There have been over 1,000 cases of monkeypox in Texas, according to the CDC. New York has the most cases in the country with 2,620. The CDC says monkeypox can be contracted through close, personal, and often skin-to-skin contact.
