At a media briefing at the site in Whitecourt on Tuesday, RCMP Cpl. Michael Hibbs said the boy was found at 10:18 a.m. Tuesday. by the volunteer diving team called the Underwater Search Team. Hibbs said the lake is about 11 feet deep.

In an interview with Global News on Monday afternoon, the boy’s mother said her son Hassan was with his twin brother at the time and was not swimming in the lake. Whitecourt RCMP and fire and emergency services responded to the area on Sunday. The park was closed to the public. The investigation was suspended Sunday afternoon and resumed Monday morning. Hibbs said the dive rescue team was not available until Tuesday because members were responding to other incidents. A spokesman for the Underwater Search Team said the team is unfunded and volunteer-run. The team is often called upon by the RCMP to assist with underwater recoveries. In an email, Audrey Shillabeer with UST said, “Two weeks ago, UST discovered a drowning victim in the north (Cold Lake). They spent three days in the Spray Lakes in southwestern Alberta last week and are still studying sonar images from that call to try to locate the victim. They stayed home long enough to clean up and reset their gear when they got the Whitecourt call and soon after: the Peace River call.’ Story continues below ad Mohamed said she and her family were in Whitecourt on Sunday as a field trip before returning to school. “I didn’t come here to lose my child. I came here to give my child hope, to be happy with them because soon we will go back to school.” Whitecourt is located approximately 180 kilometers northwest of Edmonton.
