Metropolitan police officers were called at 4.06pm. on Tuesday on Cayton Road, Greenford, to reports of a man with stab wounds and despite the efforts of paramedics he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are working to notify next of kin of the man, believed to be in his 80s, and no arrests have been made. The Met said: “A crime scene is in place and urgent inquiries to establish what happened are underway.” DCI Jim Eastwood, from the Met’s special crime branch, said: “My officers are working to understand what has happened to this man and we need the public’s help. “I am appealing to anyone who has dashcam or cycle helmet footage to contact us if they were using Western Avenue A40 eastbound in the vicinity of Cayton Road and Welland Gardens between 3.15pm. and 4 p.m. “The elderly victim, who was riding a mobility scooter, was in the area at the time. If you saw the victim or caught someone acting suspiciously in the area, it is imperative that you get in touch.” Ch Supt Sean Wilson, chief constable in Ealing, said: “This is a horrific incident which will rightly cause great alarm to people locally and across London. Our thoughts are with the elderly victim. “We are supporting our colleagues at Specialist Crime as they work to understand what happened and identify who is responsible for this horrific crime. “Public support is vital. The police and the community must work together to identify violent offenders and remove them from our streets. “My officers will remain at the scene. They are there to help and protect you – if you have information you want to share, please approach them and tell them what you know.” Police are guarding the scene with the area cordoned off. The blocked area covers a T-junction between Cayton Road, a quiet residential road with large semi-detached houses, and Runnymede Gardens, another road with semi-detached houses that runs parallel to the busy A40. Next to the A40 in Runnymede Gardens, where coroners work under bright lights on the road surface, there are two blue, yellow and white crime scene tents. The site of the stabbing is meters from a busy bus stop on the A40 motorway and a railway bridge. Dozens of police officers are guarding the scene. Some neighbors are on their streets taking phone calls, visibly shocked by the flurry of police activity. There is a steady stream of heavy traffic on the A40 which borders the stage, a main arterial route into central London. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, tweeted: “I am devastated that an elderly man has been killed in a horrific attack this afternoon. My thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones. “I am in close contact with MetPoliceUK who have an additional uniformed presence in the area. I urge anyone with information to come forward.”
