But what is Samsung FlexCam? Read on to learn everything you need to know about the Flip’s easy-to-use camera feature.

What is Samsung FlexCam?

The term “FlexCam” refers to the Z Flip 4’s hands-free photo and video capability. This feature takes advantage of Flip’s hinged design, allowing users to prop the camera on different surfaces and take selfies and group photos without asking friends or strangers to take photos for you. “It’s like having a camera and a tripod all in one,” summed up Samsung’s Dillon Hesse during the company’s August 2022 Unpacked event. FlexCam isn’t just built into the Camera app. It also works with Meta-supported apps like Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. For example, users can record hands-free Instagram stories and movie reels. Samsung also gave a mention of the feature in its Z Flip 4 press release: “With FlexCam, users can take photos and videos from different angles, with bolder angles than ever before. Shoot hands-free video or take full group selfies at various angles by partially folding the Z Flip4 to activate the FlexCam.”

How does it compare to the Flex feature on the Z Flip 3?

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the word “Flex” used in conjunction with a Samsung Flip device. In fact, FlexCam seems to describe Samsung’s existing Flex feature specifically when applied to the Camera app. On the Z Flip 3, the Flex feature referred to the automatic layout changes that occurred in the user interface when the phone was folded in half to create an L shape. For the Camera app, this meant that the shooting options normally on the top half of the screen were moved to the bottom half for easier control when the phone was folded in half. “Thanks to the Flex feature on the Galaxy Z Flip, you can use your phone handsfree by lifting it to a surface. Take selfies at completely new angles, make video calls or take long-exposure images without the use of a tripod easily by folding the Galaxy Z Flip,” Samsung said of Flex Mode at the time, essentially describing the FlexCam on the Z Flip 4 as Good. Samsung also introduced software-based advancements to Flex Mode on the Z Flip 4, as we mentioned in our first impressions of the device. For example, you can now hold the phone like a video camera to record video and turn the bottom of the screen into a touchpad for cleaning up videos. Samsung has also promised improvements to apps that were previously not fully supported by the feature.
