Emergency services were called to the scene in Stalybridge town just before 6.30pm yesterday. The body was recovered overnight from Carrbrook, a village to the east of Stalybridge. The North Ambulance Service (NWAS) sent “a number of resources” including the Hazardous Area Response Team to the incident. A formal identification has been made and trained officers are supporting her family. Detective Inspector Stephen Horton, of Tameside CID, said: “The events of yesterday evening have been nothing short of devastating and my thoughts are with the friends and family of the young girl who lost her life in such horrific circumstances. “We are doing everything we can to support the girl’s family at this incredibly difficult time and are focused on getting them the answers they deserve about how this tragedy happened.” He added: “From our inquiries so far, we are confident that there are no suspicious circumstances and that this is such a sad reminder of the dangers of entering open water, whatever the weather.” “We remind the public to avoid the temptation to cool off in reservoirs, rivers, canals or lakes. “We all want to enjoy the warm weather. make sure you do it in a safe way. Think about your family, look after your friends.” This summer has seen a rise in the number of tragic drownings as people swam to cool off in the intense heat.
