Tornadoes and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued Monday afternoon by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). In the warnings, the ECCC said forecasters were watching for a strong storm that could potentially develop into a tornado, along with damaging winds, large hail and locally heavy rainfall. In its warnings, the ECCC said there were reports of baseball-sized hail as the storm moved across the province to the southeast. “Extremely large hail can break windows, damage property and vehicles, and cause life-threatening injuries,” the warning said. “Strong gusts of wind can blow loose objects, destroy flimsy buildings, snap branches from trees and overturn large vehicles.” Just before 9 p.m., all severe thunderstorm warnings were downgraded to watches that remained in place in the southeastern corner of the province late Monday night.
