RCMP say investigators found Lois Chartrand dead in a wooded area about a kilometer from where she was last seen on Aug. 4 in an area north of Smeaton. Police had described Chartrand as an experienced mushroom picker who became separated from another person she was with and they said the person began looking for her and called police for help. Police said they were able to contact Chartrand via a walkie-talkie she was carrying until the morning of August 5, but still could not locate her. In a news release Monday, RCMP said her family has been notified and their thoughts are with them at this difficult time. They also thanked other police forces and investigative agencies who helped in the search for Chartrand, as well as members of the community and Chartrand’s family, who – despite the stressful conditions – made sure the investigators were fed and supported.
