The Uruguay international, signed for a potential club record £85million from Benfica this summer, was shown a straight red card for headbutting Joachim Andersen’s face during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield. He will be suspended for the next games against Manchester United, Bournemouth and Newcastle. “There was a challenge, but it was definitely the wrong reaction,” admitted the Liverpool manager. “He will learn from it. Unfortunately he now has three games to do so. It’s not nice for us, but that’s how it is. “Of course I will talk to him. I entered [after the game] and wanted to see the situation [on television]. In the game I couldn’t see anything to know what happened. I saw Andersen on the floor and Darwin walking away. This was my picture. Then I saw it – yes, it’s a red card. Wrong reaction to the situation. Andersen wanted that, he got it but (Nuneth) was wrong. Of course I will talk about it with Darwin, but not yet.’ Luis Díaz grabbed a superb equalizer for 10-man Liverpool, who got to Wilfried Zaha’s goal and responded well to Núñez’s dismissal, but they now sit four points behind leaders Manchester City. Klopp added: “We did extremely well at one point, but there were a lot of feet in the box. I think they blocked seven shots in the first half, that’s an incredible number. The start of the second half was again positive and then the red card. But it was the best possible reaction, a great goal and from that moment it was a special game. We were at home with a special atmosphere, unfortunately without a goal. Jurgen Klopp was impressed with what his side produced when they were down to 10 men Picture: Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC/Getty Images “It’s not common at 10 vs 11 to put a team under as much pressure as we did. I can imagine the kind of articles, headlines and comments it leads to, but that’s life.” The Liverpool manager said centre-back Joël Matip will be sidelined with a muscle injury, while Jordan Henderson is also carrying a slight injury. “It will be two weeks…more, I think [for Matip]. We’ll see,” said Klopp. “The week has been crazy. It was like we had a witch in the building, honestly. Every day someone else left for the craziest reasons.”
