The officer was part of the Robbery Intervention Detail and was shot in the head, sources told the Miami Herald. He had been rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Multiple law enforcement sources told the Herald that the officer died from his injuries, though a Miami-Dade police public information officer said later Monday night that medics were still trying to save him. “It doesn’t look good,” said Miami-Dade Police Union President Steedman Stahl. The gunman was holed up in a car at Northwest 62nd Street and 17th Avenue and managed to drive away, sources said. The gunman’s car then crashed around Northwest 62nd Street and Seventh Avenue. It was not immediately clear whether the gunman was killed in the exchange of fire with police. Video of the scene captured by WSVN Channel 7 showed at least two cars involved in the collision.
