The Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a Windsor police officer assaulted a 70-year-old man in downtown Windsor Monday afternoon. According to the SIU, at approximately 2:30 p.m., police were called to the intersection of Wyandotte Street East and Ouellete Avenue for a man holding a knife and threatening people. There was an interaction between the man and the officers during which one officer deployed a directed energy weapon and another officer shot the man. The man was taken to hospital with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries. The SIU reported Monday night that the man has since died. Three SIU investigators and three medical examiners have been assigned to the case. Roads in the area remain closed.
