It is understood the remains were found in items inside a storage container bought by an unsuspecting family and that police could be dealing with multiple sets of remains, according to Newshub’s current affairs. Police have launched a homicide investigation and are trying to locate the remains. Police do not believe the family is involved in the incident. The occupants of an Auckland home called police when they discovered the remains after “unknown property was brought to their address”, said DI Tofilau Famanuia Vaaelua. Police did not comment further, saying only that an autopsy was underway. “We appreciate that there is significant public interest in what happened, however, given the nature of the discovery, there are still a number of investigations that need to be carried out,” Faamuanaia Vaaelua said. “The priority for the police is to confirm the identity of the deceased so that we can establish the full circumstances behind the discovery. “This will also lead to next of kin counseling. Given the nature of the discovery, this may take some time.” There was no immediate danger to the public, he said. A neighbor told Newshub: “I feel sorry for the family because they have nothing to do with it. And whoever did it, come forward. It’s a bit unfair bro. It’s horrible.” News website Stuff reported that other neighbors had noticed a “bad smell” coming from the property on Thursday, shortly before police arrived. Another neighbor said her son had seen a suitcase being removed from a trailer on the property and taken to a forensics scene. Detectives and forensic teams were seen standing back in shock, he said.
