The incident, which lasted about 10 hours, began shortly after 5 p.m. when police said a woman called 911 asking for help from what sounded like a vehicle.

Kamloops RCMP said they received a second call a short time later about someone driving erratically on Highway 1 and a woman trying to get out of the vehicle. A third call came in shortly before 6 p.m. reporting that a family member and a child had been kidnapped, police said. Officers responding to that call found an empty vehicle with a gun allegedly inside. Around the same time, police went to a farm property where someone had reported seeing the suspect vehicle near a trailer, Mounties said. The police set up a roadblock and called the Emergency Squad.

“After 3 a.m., the male suspect came out of the trailer with a gun and a child. During the engagement with the officers, the man was shot and killed,” according to an RCMP statement. “The child was unharmed and a woman was later located with non-life threatening injuries inside the trailer.” Story continues below ad Police said both women were taken to the hospital for treatment.
