PR/communications professional Robert Peace filed his mayoral candidacy papers today at the Civic Centre. Well-known teacher/school librarian Ron Zagordo is running for a city council seat. Frank Gaccione, owner of the old Virene building and treasurer of the Downtown Association, is running for school board trustee. Mayoral candidate Irini came to Sault Ste. Marie two years and two months ago as director of community relations at Rolling Pictures. Earlier this year, he traveled to Europe to help Ukrainian refugees. Last week, Peace announced he was stepping down from Rolling Pictures to become president of Rolling North, a new Sault-based corporate production and media venture. “It’s been 40 years since I started my career at Queen’s Park at the young age of just 21,” Peace said in a press release. “As a recent university graduate entering the chambers of the Ontario Legislature, I observed early on the dedication and commitment of those elected to serve. The knowledge gained from working with the Premier of Ontario and the provincial opposition has never left me. I have the inspiration”. “My career in communications and media production has since taken me around the world and paved the path that brought my employer to this community. I am now proud to call Sault Ste. Marie home. I am here to stay.” “I want to take this great city forward on an agenda of innovative ideas, pragmatic approaches and healthy working relationships.” “I’m the candidate who brings no political baggage to the table, who owes no friends, and who has nothing to gain but your trust.” “Federal taxpayer, provincial taxpayer and municipal taxpayer – we’re all the same person. Why do we put our hard-earned tax dollars in silos and think we’re going to come up with an efficient, successful formula to fund positive change in our city? Local leadership must break down existing silos, bring together all levels of governance and motivate the board to work as a team.” The deadline for other candidates to file paperwork to run in the October 24 municipal election is 2 p.m. next Friday, August 19.
