UPDATE: 3:22 p.m Police shot and killed a suspect Sunday near Walhachin following an alleged kidnapping involving a woman and a child. Mounties were first alerted to the situation just before 5:30 p.m. when a woman called 911 from a vehicle asking for help. A short time later, a second caller reported a vehicle was driving erratically on the Trans-Canada Highway and a woman was trying to flee. A third party then called 911 to report that a family member and a child had been kidnapped. The Mounties have not said where the abduction took place. “Just before 9 p.m., officers attended a rural property after receiving a report of the initial suspicious vehicle near a trailer and set up a roadblock before calling the emergency response team,” RCMP spokeswoman Dawn Roberts said in a release. type. Roberts said ERT officials attended and took over the containment. “After 3 a.m., the male suspect allegedly came out of the trailer with a gun and a child,” he said. “During the engagement with officers, the man was shot and killed. The child was not injured and a woman was later located inside the trailer with non-life threatening injuries.” A short time later, police went to the suspect’s home and found a second woman bound and injured inside. Both women were taken to hospital for treatment. Police are investigating the initial incidents and BC’s Office of Independent Investigations, the province’s police watchdog, is investigating the police shooting. UPDATE: 2:29 p.m BC Police are investigating an incident Sunday west of Kamloops, but it’s still unclear what allegedly happened. Now that the Independent Investigations Office is looking into the incident, Mounties said they cannot release details. On Sunday afternoon, multiple Castanet Kamloops readers reported a significant police presence near Savona, and social media posts indicated some roads were closed in the area. RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said she was unable to provide any information due to the IIO’s investigation. “I have heard from the Kamloops RCMP about a police incident in Savona,” he said. “We are unable to comment at this time as there is an active IIO investigation.” The IIO is a monitoring agency called upon to investigate any cases in which a person in BC suffers death or serious injury as a result of an interaction with the police.
