A group of climbers climbing Ecuador’s Carihuairazo volcano fell nearly 200 feet Saturday morning, killing three and injuring 12 others, rescue officials said. Rescuers were notified shortly after 9:30 a.m. that 15 climbers were involved in the fall, ECU 911 rescue services said in a statement. “A 47-year-old woman and two men aged 45 and 50 died in this emergency situation,” officials said. “Due to weather conditions and night, it was not possible to evacuate the bodies of the three dead.” Six women and six men, aged between 39 and 58, were rescued from the mountain and treated for various injuries. The stratovolcano has an elevation of 16,739 feet and neighbors the larger volcano Chimborazo, which has an elevation of over 20,300 feet.
