Samsung Galaxy Flip 4
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is the flip phone for the mainstream. Its vertically folding design transforms the 6.7-inch screen into a coaster size, easily fitting into smaller pockets. This time around the hinge, as well as the flexible glass, have been improved to be more durable. Samsung says it can withstand up to 200,000 folds. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. Credit: Tom Li Samsung screens are known for their quality and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is no exception, with a 120Hz refresh rate for silky smooth animations and full DCI-P3 color gamut coverage. On the front is a 1.9-inch cover display with a 60Hz refresh rate and the same stunning colors as the main display. The phone is built to be more durable as a whole. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 uses Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus+ and an aluminum frame to build its shell. It should also avoid the rain with its IPX8 water resistance. For performance, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 system-on-chip paired with 8GB of memory and up to 512GB of storage. The storage space deserves a special mention, as it is double the capacity of the previous generation. This time, Samsung increased the battery capacity from 3,300 mAh to 3,700 mAh to mitigate the biggest drawback of the previous iteration – battery life. It’s a modest increase, but we’ll have to wait and see how it pans out. The cameras are a little less exciting. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 seems to have inherited the camera system from the previous generation, with a 12MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. There is also a selfie camera on the main screen. It’s not the under-display camera used on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Samsung has opted for the traditional pin-hole camera instead. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is available for pre-order now starting at C$1,260 for the 8GB/128GB configuration. Expected to ship on August 26th.
Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
Apart from the phones, Samsung also launched the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro. The Watch 5 comes in 44mm and 40mm watch faces, while the Watch 5 Pro only comes in 45mm, which is more suitable for larger wrists. Being the higher end of the two, the Watch 5 Pro uses a premium titanium case with a sapphire crystal display. Samsung says the sapphire crystal display is 1.6 times stronger to withstand scratches and accidental bumps. The Watch 5 also uses the sapphire display, but has an aluminum casing. But the biggest advantage of the Watch 5 Pro is its much larger 590 mAh battery. The 40mm Watch 5 has a 284mAh battery and even the larger 44mm version has a 410mAh cell. However, all watches feature fast wireless charging, capable of reaching 45% capacity from zero in 30 minutes. In addition to telling the time, the Galaxy Watch 5 series tracks a host of metrics for more than 90 activities, including swimming, hiking, cycling, golf and yoga. The watch’s BioActive sensor has been improved to be closer to the skin for more accurate heart rate and well-being measurements. Additionally, the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Sensor (BIA) can monitor body fat, skeletal muscle, body water and more. In addition to fully customizable watch faces and wallpapers, the Galaxy Watch 5 series also features a range of colorful bands. The straps are easily interchangeable so you can match the color to the days of the week. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 starts at C$350 for the Bluetooth version and C$420 for the LTE version. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro starts at $560 for the Bluetooth version and $630 for the LTE version. All are available for pre-order now and will ship on August 26th.
