After the brazen attack on author Salman Rushdie, the 75-year-old’s ex-wife Padma Lakshmi is relieved to have overcome the “nightmare”. Taking to her Twitter account, the “Top Chef” personality broke her silence on the attack on the “Satanic Verses” author, writing that she was “concerned and speechless” but “can finally breathe.” Lakshmi and Rushdie were married from 2004 to 2007 after beginning a relationship in 1999. She also liked several tweets that also wished Rushdie well. According to the Associated Press, Rushdie was stabbed 10 to 15 times. His spokesman said in a statement that not only did the author suffer liver damage, but nerves in his hand and an eye were severed, which will likely lead to the loss of that eye. Rushdie has long been a target, after publishing works deemed critical or controversial of Islam, making enemies with Muslim countries around the world. He was nearly assassinated under the Khomeini regime in Iran and was hit-listed by al-Qaeda a decade ago.
