A source told Sky Sports News they have tabled a £40m offer. Everton’s position during this period has been that the player is not for sale. The Blues are believed to be in talks with the Candies over a permanent move for the highly-rated 21-year-old. Everton are believed to be hoping to push for £50million to allow Gordon to leave Goodison Park. Tottenham wanted to sign him in an £80m package with Richarlison earlier in the summer, but Everton were not interested in selling him at the time. Newcastle also made an approach but did not make a formal bid. Gordon has started both of Everton’s Premier League games so far this season, playing as a false number nine in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the striker recovers from a knee injury. £40m for a 21-year-old who has played 51 times in the Premier League? He hasn’t set fire to the heather yet. Sky Sports’ Graeme Souness
Gordon has made 51 Premier League appearances so far for Everton, scoring four goals. It was his free-kick that led to Jarrad Branthwaite scoring the equalizer against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last December. Sky Sports’ Graeme Souness said: “£40m for a 21-year-old who has played 51 times in the Premier League? He hasn’t set fire to the heath yet. “He’s a dribbler and he’s pretty quick. To me, he goes to the ground a little too easily, but it’s a lot of money for someone who’s only played 50 games. You don’t scream when you see him play that he’s going to be a top man.” Chelsea’s new owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have spent their first summer at the helm at Stamford Bridge carrying out a rapid overhaul in every department. Ambitious US bosses have already spent big on Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Carney Chukwuemeka. Promising young goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina has signed and will remain on loan at Chicago Fire as the Blues continue their pursuit of Inter Milan teenage midfielder Cesare Casadei. Chelsea are reportedly in talks with Barcelona over a deal for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while a bid to prize Wesley Fofana away from Leicester also continues.

“Everton can’t afford to let Gordon go”

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher: “It’s a lot of money (£40m) for a young player just coming on the scene, but I don’t see how Everton could take it. The position he is in right now, with no players in attack. “He’s the one big hope for the club. The fans are not deaf at Everton. They’ve lost their first two games and they know they’re in for a tough season. They need attacking players to come in, so there’s no way they can let him go . “Especially because he’s a local lad, he’s the only one the fans hang their hats on. I think it should be a lot higher if Everton are going to approve.”

Where would Gordon fit in at Chelsea?

Sky Sports’ Karen Carney: “There were rumors that Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech would go, so it would be more like a replacement for one of them. He’s young, he’s an English talent and that’s the kind of recruitment they’ve gone for. “They want some young players and some experienced players. In terms of getting a recognized centre-forward, that’s not the type of player or the answer that’s being talked about.”
