Toronto police said they received reports around 2:33 p.m. of a woman stabbed at a home near Midland Avenue and Kingston Road. Police said the injuries were serious. The woman was taken to hospital where she is in stable condition. At a press conference outside the home, Toronto Police Chief James Ramer said the suspect died in hospital as a result of the shooting. “We were advised that a suspect was in the home with a child,” Ramer said. “Officers had an interaction with the suspect and he was shot.” Toronto Police Chief James Ramer spoke to members of the media following the stabbing and shooting of police in Scarborough on Saturday afternoon. (CBC) Ramer said he did not know how many shots the officers fired. A child was in the home at the time, who was unharmed, according to police. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and is investigating the fatal shooting of the suspect. “The SIU is going to investigate the incident, the interaction between the individual and the police, and at the same time we’re going to investigate the original incident, the stabbing,” Ramer said. Responding to questions from members of the media, Ramer added that the incident was “tragic” and the police would provide assistance to the family. “It has a huge impact on the officers involved and the families involved,” he said of the shooting.
Man had caught the child: SIU
In a statement released Saturday night, the SIU said the suspect who was killed was 42 years old. “The man, believed to be involved in the woman’s injury and who had the knife, grabbed a small child and entered a residence,” the statement said. Three officers shot the man, the SIU said. He was taken to hospital where he died at 15:24 The SIU has assigned six investigators, including three medical examiners, to the case. They will speak to the three officers in question as well as four officer witnesses. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday. The SIU is an independent state agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in the death, serious injury, sexual assault or discharge of a firearm at a person.
