Aerial view of the Richter Mountain fire from Friday, August 12, 2022. Crews were able to keep the Richter Mountain fire from growing overnight. The fire was caused by a vehicle fire along Highway 3 between Osoyoos and Cawston early Friday morning. It quickly spread uphill but was then slowed by rocky terrain. “There was a slight increase in fire behavior yesterday afternoon with some wind. However, overnight there was no significant increase,” said fire information officer Karley Desrosiers. “We did have crews on site overnight and they are making good progress with the containment as well.” He says crews were working on both sides of the fire to build guards. Helicopters were dropping buckets and on Friday night, water tankers were dropping retardant to contain the fire. Late yesterday afternoon, the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen lifted an evacuation warning issued earlier in the day for 29 properties near the Chopaka fire.
