EMS told CTV News that paramedics responded to the scene, near 17th Avenue and 85th Street SW, at about 4:20 a.m.
When they arrived, they found only one vehicle involved in the incident.
The driver, a man aged about 45, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Calgary police say the intersection is closed for the investigation.
Please note that 17 Avenue SW, between Aspen Summit Drive and St Moritz Drive, as well as 85 Street SW, between 19 Avenue and Aspen Stone Boulevard, remain closed while we investigate a fatal collision.

Officials told CTV News Saturday that the crash involved an SUV speeding along 17th Avenue when it hit a lamppost at 85 Street SW
“As a result of this collision, the driver died,” said Sergeant Colin Foster with the CPS traffic unit.
Foster says they are now looking to talk to witnesses to the crash to see if there was anything else that could help them determine what happened.
“The damage to the vehicle is devastating,” he said. “We have some witnesses who were at the scene at the time and helped us with what they saw, but the things that happened before he came to that location will really help us piece together what happened today.”
