Videos posted on social media in the early hours of Saturday showed strong winds and structures falling from the stage as large crowds of festival-goers were evacuated. The Valencia department of Spain’s national meteorological service (AEMET) said on Twitter that the warm breeze is causing very strong wind gusts and sudden temperature rises. Around 3 a.m. local time, the temperature was 40.5 degrees Celsius (104.9 degrees Fahrenheit) at Alicante-Elche Airport, just south of the concert venue, on the Mediterranean coast — with winds of 82 kilometers (about 50 miles) the hour . Temperatures have soared across Europe with droughts reported in several parts of England and fires in France.
