Alone in the Dark, for those too young to remember, is widely regarded as the granddaddy of the survival horror genre, with the 1992 original pioneering the fixed-camera formula that would influence the likes of Resident Evil and Resident Evil. There are changes to the story—Jeremy Hartwood, who hangs himself at the beginning of the original, is now an absent guest at the Derceto Mansion, which is being reimagined as a slightly more crowded mental institution for the rich and wealthy—but the core remains the same, which means players will control either Carnby or Emily in their single-player adventure, with character choice said to have a significant impact on how the game plays. NPCs, for example, will react differently depending on who you play, cutscenes will play out differently, and there are “several areas” exclusive to each character.
