It looks like Liverpool will not sign a midfielder this month, despite heavy speculation that they might. The Athletic report that neither Jurgen Klopp nor Julian Ward see the value in a signing at the moment. Both have to change their minds for anything to happen. But the thing is, Liverpool need to get a midfielder. The only real question is if they do this month and they seem to think they don’t. James Milner is getting old, however, and is out of contract next summer. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s deals also expire then, and both Jordan Henderson and Thiago are the wrong side of 30. Outside of that, you’re left with Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho – all of whom they are infinite. However, it’s easy to see why Klopp might want to stick with this group. The age of the players may not show this season. The young trio could improve quickly at any time, providing incredible quality just like this. The quality is there for a great campaign if all goes well. But maybe not. That plan could blow up in Liverpool’s face and put their season in jeopardy, especially in the second half of their post-World Cup campaign. And that’s why we think they could repeat a trick that proved very successful last season. The opportunity appears to be there.

Liverpool still have a chance to sign Mateus Nunes

Liverpool have been continuously linked with Mateus Nunes. In fact, Correio da Manha said so just this week – however, it doesn’t seem to be happening this month. And part of that might be that Sporting don’t need to sell. Yet. Correio da Manha, once again, recently claimed that Sporting’s £3.4m sale of Bruno Tabata to Palmeiras is firmly on their books until at least January. They no longer need to sell anyone to keep things going positively. Photo by Visionhaus/Getty Images But then again, January. Sporting will face questions over selling Nunes in the winter transfer window and Liverpool could make a tempting move. After all, it’s something they did last time. Luis Diaz arrived from Porto as a revelation, instantly finding a place in the starting line-up and improving Liverpool. The Reds challenged on all fronts to the death with the Colombian playing a big part. And if Liverpool find they are wrong about midfield before January, they will have their chance in Nunes. They might even have a better chance of signing him than they do now. Diaz’s success last term shows they should definitely prepare to make a move for a player who could be perfect for them.
