As part of a court order, the greyhounds were rescued in July from where they were raised at the Envigo breeding and research facility in Cumberland in one of the largest dog rescue efforts in U.S. history, according to the Humane Society of the United States. They are now being sent as far away as California, Wyoming, Florida and Massachusetts in hopes of finding their forever homes, WUSA9 reported. The puppies were to be sold for use in pharmaceutical and biotech research, according to Envigo’s website. The company says animal welfare is one of the company’s top priorities, but federal audits over the past two years have found many of the dogs were living in squalid conditions. 4,000 beagle puppies were rescued from a research lab last month.APThe beagles have been sent to shelters across the country for adoption.AP Investigators found malnourished, sick and injured greyhounds at the facility. The dogs were kept in cages where feces and food debris accumulated, according to a federal complaint. More than 300 puppies died at the facility between January and July last year. The researchers further alleged that Envigo performed painful medical experiments on the puppies — including euthanizing them without sedation, according to WUSA9. Local Virginia-based nonprofit Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is helping with the mammoth task of finding new homes for the dogs. Kitty Block, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, holds a beagle after its rescue in July. AP The puppies were to be sold for biotech research before being rescued.AP Last weekend, Homeward Trails hosted a “Suds and Netflix” night for the newly arrived dogs, who got their first bath before watching a movie, the report said. The six-week-old puppies also visited some elderly people at a nursing home this week in Fairfax County, Virginia.
